Today, the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, has since 2012 been recognized as “Giving Tuesday”, a day set aside to emphasize making donations to worthy nonprofit organizations who do good work in our communities.
In a release yesterday, the Red Cross announced that Sonoco would be generously donating $100,000 to the organization to offset the extraordinary challenges to the American Red Cross of South Carolina’s mission of responding to disasters throughout the pandemic. They stated that the Sonoco contribution will help the Red Cross in advance of disasters, helping to power the organization with essential infrastructure, trained volunteers, and critical resources necessary to provide immediate relief and support to those in crisis. Last year, the Red Cross of South Carolina responded to nearly 1500 disasters in the state, assisting 5600 people. They stated that you can help, too. Gifts of any size help the American Red Cross to ensure that people can continue to turn to them for help and hope when it’s needed most. You can donate at redcross.org, call 1-800-RED CROSS, or text REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation.
Sonoco, which has a presence in Union County, was founded in 1899. They are a global provider of consumer packaging, industrial products, protective packaging, and displays and packaging supply chain services. With annual net sales of around $5 billion, the company has 21,000 employees working in more than 300 operations in 33 countries, serving some of the world’s best-known brands in 85 nations. The American Red Cross shelters, feeds, and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies nearly half of the nation’s blood; teaches lifesaving skills; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. It is a charitable organization, not a government agency. The Red Cross depends on volunteers and the generosity of the public to perform its mission. Find out more at www.redcross.org/SC.
